Shroom Season

It’s mushroom season in the redwoods, like these Amanita muscaria, and all kinds of generic browns (below). Some are delicious, but some are ferociously poisonous. So I just look at ’em, and get my eating shrooms at the store.

Little River Morning

A salmon sunrise—and a duck—grace the Little River, Humboldt County, California.

What a Seagull Thinks

A young gull reflects on her life. ‘I don’t really like fishguts.’

Arf! Arf! Ow.

A young sea lion basks on the beach in annual ‘catastrophic’ molt. Sea lions slough and re-grow their entire epidermis, and this guy found a warm, dry corner for the uncomfortable process.

From the Weird Vegetable Collection

It looks like an alien, but Romanesco is “Italian broccoli” and supposed to be delicious. Didn’t buy any, though . . .

Stella, Surfer Grrrl

Stella, now nearly 8 months old, has learned swimming & sticks!

Pastels on the Plaza

The Arcata Plaza is covered with color once a year for the annual Pastels on the Plaza to benefit Northcoast Children’s Services. Businesses, schools and nonprofits buy a square on the sidewalks surrounding the Plaza to credit original pastel artwork ranging from social messages to advertisements . . . for bars and porta-potties. Tuna Ted

A nice couple of albacore from a tuna-fishing trip 50 miles out of Eureka. This is not your mother’s Starkist tuna-in-a-can.

The crustacean of the Other Coast, fatted and then consumed on my return home to Maine this week. Thanks for a lovely evening, Bucky.

Frenetic Kinetic 2013

FOR THE GLORY!
The annual semi-controlled insanity “For the Glory!” that is the Kinetic Sculpture Race launches on a beautiful May day from the Arcata Plaza. Hundreds turned out to send the wild human-powered machines on their three-day race over roads, dunes, beach, Humboldt Bay and hills. See accounts of last year’s Kinetic Frenzy here, with story on the race’s history.
